Citation Generators

October 26th, 2007

Oh, am I loving this!

I used the one that Ruth recommended some time ago, “Bib Me” and found it amazingly easy to use.

But the question still remains- when do we want students to use this? There are still certain skills and understandings about a bibliography creation (or Reference List as we call it in Saskatoon Public) that we would wish students to have. i think of the obvious ones:

  • alphabetical order
  • locating publisher, place of publication, copyright date
  • practicing a prescribed format
  • recognizing copyright demands

I believe that I would still teach the grade 3’s and 4’s to learn how to make a basic list with author and title. In the higher grades, when they have successfully shown that they are able to follow correct bibliographic format, I would be inclined to introduce them to an online Citation Generator.

But for me- yes, I’ll be using it. I’ve already practiced it enough.

Okay- how do I link my bib to this? I’ve tried a few things and they don’t work. I can save it to my own drive at work but this blogger does not support uploading it. Any ideas?

Copied and pasted it in- that works- couldn’t see where to save it any other way onto my drive.

Well I can’t answer your question about getting your bib onto your blog. I saved mine as a word document which I thought I could copy and paste but no dice. Maybe someone else can tell us? I too used BibMe. I noticed that for citing the website you have to provide author, date etc. and all BibMe does is put in the URL and when it was retrieved. Or am I mistaken? I think I would still go through the steps manually with younger grades as well at this point but as more teachers introduce their students to working on the web I would encourage use of the citation tools. I think knowing why we have to cite works is more important that the details of how to do it. But I’m not saying I don’t want to see it done right! These citation tools will help students do it correctly. I do have one concern and that is that I had to register giving my e-mail address to have my bib saved. Would students in our system be allowed to do this? Is it a safety concern? Can anyone answer this question?

    Hi Jane,

On Edublogs you click the upload button at the bottom of the page – then browser for the file on your hard drive. Then click the upload button. When the file has uploaded – click send to editor. You may want to have your cursor where you want the file to be in the post.

    Diane…

As for Blogger I did some serious searching in a number of help forums and was quite surprised to find that you cannot upload a file. You can upload almost anything to Bogger – but .docs and pdfs – it seems strange. Most places suggest that you have to use a free file storage site and then link to the document. I hope someone can prove me wrong.

    Hi,

Great to hear you’ve been finding BibMe useful! You may be interested to hear that we’re currently building a feature which will allow you to easily share a bibliography and link to it from another website (like this blog). That’s slated to be released around the middle of November.

    I Love Kids’ Books
I have the privilege of being a teacher-librarian in 2 elementary schools. That means I have the best of all worlds; I teach and work with children from Kindergarten through grade 8; my job encompasses the management of the libraries as well as developing the collections. And my homework? Reading and more reading! What more could a life-long bookworm ask for? The point of this blog is mainly for my own use- to make myself some notes about some of the many books I read- to prompt my failing memory, to use as the basis for book-talks or newsletter inserts and to provide information for others that may be interested. These will not be formal or lengthy- but just some of my thoughts.
